Sentebale welcomes Richard Miller as new Chief Executive

Sentebale is delighted to announce the appointment of Richard Miller as its new Chief Executive, bringing more than 30 years of international development experience to the role. Richard has worked with a hugely diverse range of community-based development organisations across Africa and Asia and been involved in high level international global advocacy, campaigning and fundraising work throughout his career

He firmly believes that communities can help solve their own problems and, given the right resources and support, lead transformational and sustainable change. This attracted him to work with Sentebale since the charity’s approach is rooted in enabling positive community led change.

Richard began his career with CAFOD in the mid-80s as an Africa Programme Officer – working in Ethiopia in response to the famine and in South Africa during the dying days of apartheid. He was then appointed CAFOD Deputy Director and subsequently worked as CAFOD’s Southern Africa Regional Representative, living in Zimbabwe for 6 years. He witnessed at first hand the devastating impact of the HIV and AIDS pandemic with so many lives lost. As a result, he is passionate about playing a part in helping achieve an AIDS free generation.

In 2004 Richard was appointed Chief Executive of ActionAid UK and helped transform the charity from being a UK led organisation to a much more diverse globally led organisation. In 2015 he took up the role of ActionAid International Humanitarian Director.  Throughout his time with ActionAid Richard led many responses to emergencies including the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Nepal earthquake, the Syrian refugee crisis and the East Africa famine.

Richard lives near Brighton, is married to Sally and has three sons, of whom he is very proud. Richard loves to travel and spend time with his family, has a season ticket for Brighton and Hove Albion FC and, when possible, likes to read, cycle and play tennis.

Richard Miller says; “I am excited to join Sentebale, such a unique organisation. I am passionate about its mission to bring real change in the lives of young people. Having worked with community based organisations in Southern Africa for over 30 years, I am certain there has never been a better or more important time to make a significant difference in the fight against HIV and AIDS and ensure that young people can shape their own future. My focus will be on helping Sentebale have the highest quality programmes and work in partnership with others to achieve the greatest impact.”
