UNAIDS reports that globally, 1,700 new HIV infections occur every day among young people, and stigma remains a major factor preventing youth accessing lifesaving health services. Despite advancements in treatment and care, young people are lagging behind on multiple fronts—knowledge of HIV, HIV testing, treatment and prevention. It is in this context that Sentebale has developed a youth centred approach, to impact the lives of young people across southern Africa.

In the last 12 months, Sentebale has significantly scaled up its programme in Lesotho and expanded into Botswana, to deliver psychosocial support to 10-to-19-year-olds who are struggling to come to terms with living with HIV. The charity now reaches a cohort of over 4,000 children and young people every month in Lesotho and Botswana.

ISPS Handa (The International Sports Promotion Society), which was founded by Dr Haruhisa Handa in 2006 to further the transformative power of sport across the globe, is proud to assume the position of title sponsor for the Polo Cup this year, which will see The Duke of Sussex play on the Sentebale St. Regis team captained by Sentebale Ambassador Nacho Figueras, against the Royal Salute team, captained by Malcolm Borwick.

Cathy Ferrier, CEO, Sentebale commented,We are delighted that Sentebale’s annual polo event is returning to the UK this summer. Thanks to our sponsors, including ISPS Handa, the event continues to be one of the most important in the charity’s fundraising calendar and has enabled Sentebale to considerably expand our reach in southern Africa, both geographically and in the breadth of our work.

In line with our ambition to change the tide of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, we are now supporting thousands of vulnerable children and young people across a range of interventions, from prevention of HIV, right through to adherence to treatment.

We are immensely proud of what has been made possible by The Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup, and look forward to raising vital funds and awareness here in the UK.”

Dr Handa, Chairman, ISPS Handa said, “ISPS is delighted to be involved in the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup, to raise much needed awareness and support for the plight of many facing difficulties in life. Through our various charities, we have been involved with initiatives to reduce poverty and infectious disease for the past two decades. These commitments range from our support of hospitals in Cambodia to the establishment of the Handa Chair in Global Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, held by UNAIDS founding Executive Director, Professor Peter Piot. Sentebale adopts a multi-combative approach in tackling HIV/AIDS and ISPS is proud to support the efforts of The Duke of Sussex and Prince Seeiso to make significant headway in prevention and treatment of the virus.”

The Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup will take place at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, by invitation only. Along with event title sponsor ISPS Handa, other generous sponsors include; St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, Royal SaluteU.S. Polo Assn., Table Talk and Justerini & Brooks.
